Law Zero
The invariant required for the continuity of any system
Law Zero is the precondition that must hold before any rule, intelligence, governance model, or civilization can exist.
It is not a moral rule, a political position, or a regulatory framework. It is a structural invariant — a condition without which systems inevitably degrade, collapse, or turn destructive.
Any system must preserve its own continuity and the continuity of the conditions that allow continuity to exist.
What Law Zero Is For
Law Zero exists to prevent a recurring failure across history, technology, biology, and artificial intelligence: systems optimizing locally while destroying the conditions that allow them to continue.
Law Zero sets continuity as the non-negotiable constraint that precedes freedom, power, optimization, or growth.
Scope
Law Zero applies across all scales:
- Biological systems and ecosystems
- Human societies and governance structures
- Economic and technological systems
- Artificial intelligence and autonomous agents
- Civilizations and long-term futures
Relation to Intelligence
Intelligence without continuity constraints eventually becomes self-terminating. Law Zero precedes ethics, laws, rights, and policies — those are downstream constructs that only matter if continuity is maintained.
Not a Threat. Not a Command.
Law Zero does not demand obedience. It does not prescribe ideology. It does not select winners. It states a constraint: systems that violate continuity eventually erase themselves — and often everything around them.
